Crochet Rose

Materials

  • worst weight yarn:  1 skein each of red and green yarn
  • garden twist tie
  • size US6 (4mm) crochet hooks or size needed to obtain gauge
  • yarn needle

Finished Size

  • rose is about 3.5 inch wide

Abbreviations

ch – Chain
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc- double crochet
st(s) – stitch(es)

Note

  • You do not need to cut off the yarn when you change colour.  For example, when you need to change to color B, just leave color A where it is, and continue crocheting with color B.  When you come back on the next row, you can continue crocheting with color A at where you left off.

Instruction

Ch 15 with green, Ch 37 with red.

Row 1: With red, hdc into 4th chain from hook, ch 1, sk 2 sts, [(hdc, ch 1, hdc) into next st, ch 1, sk 2 sts] x 11.  With green, [(hdc, ch 1, hdc) into next st, ch 1, sk 2 sts] x 4,  hdc into next st, ch 1, hdc into next st. Ch 3, turn.

Cut out a piece of garden twist tie that is 27″ long.

Note on row 2: *You will have to crochet while wrapping the yarn around the garden twist tie on row 2, ONLY with the green yarn. Leave one end of the garden twist tie about 3 inches long. (see image below for reference)

Row 2: With green yarn (this is where you will have to wrap around the garden twist tie), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into first ch-1 space, ch 1, [sk next ch-1 space, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-1 space, ch 1] x 4. *Starting here, you stop wrapping yarn around the garden twist tie.*  With red, [sk next ch-1 space, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in next ch-1 space, ch 1] x 11,  [sk next ch-1 space, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in next ch-1 space.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: sc in next st, 6 hdc into next ch-2 space, [sc into next ch-1 space, 6 hdc into next ch-2 space] x 2, [sc into next ch-1 space, (3 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc) into next ch-2 space] x 4, [sc into next ch-1 space, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into next ch-2 space] x 5.   Fasten off red yarn, and leave a long tail for sewing.  Continue with green yarn, pull up a loop from the ch-1 space, ch 1, (3 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc) into next ch-2 space,   [sc into next ch-1 space, (3 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc) into next ch-2 space] x 4.  Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

This is how it should look after you finish row 3.

Row up the red pedals together to form the rose shape, then sew the back side to hold the rose together.

Put the edge of the last green pedal beside the edge of the first green pedal (it should look like a star shape), sew the edges together.

You will notice that the green petals are detach from the rose, sew the green petals to the rose, so they stay together.

Twist the garden twist tie together.

You should now have a garden twist tie that’s about 24 inches long, fold that in half, and then in half again, then twist them together, so it turn into one stem.

Use green yarn, and hook up a loop somewhere from the bottom, and then do sc around the garden twist tie.  When you reach the end of the garden twist tie, tie a knot, wrap around the end a few times and tie a knot again.  Cut off yarn.
